TFS on Azure

Today, Brian Harry blogged about his team’s effort to see what it would take to get TFS running on Azure. As he mentioned, it turns out that they didn’t have to change to much although they are not done yet and there are still some challenges up ahead.

I hope you know the significance of this message and the possibility of having TFS hosted on Azure…. I’ll just give you a minute to collect your thoughts on this… heck you know what I’ll give you all the time you need.

If you know me, you know that for me this is just the best news you can give me. The power Azure brings from a developers point of view, the raw power the MS data centers provide you to keep your stuff up and running, the scalability that Azure can give you, server under load??? and there… another instance just spun up.

Think about all the possibilities you have when you want to extend the TFS environment, now you would have Azure to build upon.

Future upgrade path, Microsoft will now need to provide you with a working upgrade solution if the next TFS release comes around.

Build engines, your TFS safe and sound in the cloud but you can keep your build server close to you (if you want) something that is currently impossible with 3rd party TFS hosted solutions.

I am excited…and truly hope it turns into a commercial product.
